The photograph below shows the problem with the horn's valves. Look at the upper passage of each valve. The valve on the left has a plug of some kind at the bottom of the passage. The valve on the right has a cavity where this plug should go. Walter Lawson determined that this material is cork and fashioned replacements for the missing pieces. Thanks to his fine work, the horn is now very free blowing at all dynamic levels and plays quite well.
Below are links to some pictures of Walter Lawson repairing the valves. The pictures were taken on 2 May 2002 at his shop in Boonsboro, Md., using a Leica IIIf BD and 50mm f/2 Summicron lens on Fuji Superia 400 film by available light. Exposures were f/2.0 at 1/15 or 1/30 sec.
